REVLAC System Rehabilitation

John Burns successfully completed the rehabilitation of the Reversible Lane Access Control System (REVLAC) on the Kennedy Expressway South Bound lanes. John Burns removed and replaced the existing outdated equipment that opens and closes the reversible lanes, upgraded the existing control and communication equipment, replaced the existing cameras, and installed additional cameras to monitor the reversible lanes. John Burns overcame significant challenges, including an unexpected major increase in cable removal and installation, complex equipment replacements in tight spaces, and long lead times for materials. Coordination with another contractor and constant communication across teams were key to managing the technically demanding electrical work and staying on schedule.

• Removed and replaced 117 existing swing gate cabinets and arms of various lengths.
• Removed and replaced 6 existing vehicle restraining barriers.
• Removal of 550,000 LF of existing power and control cable.
• 950,000 LF of power, control, and fiber optic cable installed to feed the entire system.
• Upgraded the existing PLC control and communication system that controls the opening and closing of the reversible lanes.
• 56 existing cameras have been upgraded to allow them to function with the new PLC system.
