Project Description
Client: CTA – Chicago Transit Authority
Location: Chicago, Illinois
Completion Date: 2022
John Burns replaced escalators and installed new canopies at the CTA Blue Line Irving Park and Pulaski stations without disrupting CTA service or the I-90 Kennedy Expressway. The project was completed during the COVID-19 pandemic, amid a global aluminum shortage that caused significant delays with the new canopy system. By re-phasing the work, the John Burns team minimized disruptions and successfully delivered the project on schedule.
Scope of Work
- Furnish and install 2 new escalators at both stations.
- Demolish and dispose of 2,500 linear feet of existing platform polycarbonate canopy.
- Install 2,500 linear feet of new translucent insulated single panel polycarbonate canopy.
- Complete the roof system replacement at both stations.
- Perform complete station rehabilitation at both stations including new plumbing, mechanical, electrical, painting and tile replacement.
- Paint all the steel members of the existing and new canopy system on the platforms.
- Overcame the challenge of making the new escalators fit in the existing locations by delivering and installing the escalator truss in pieces to allow it to fit.
