27th Street Metra Pedestrian Bridge Replacement

The Challenges

  • Demolition of existing pedestrian bridge at Metra Electric Station.
  • Replacement of approximately 210’ long pedestrian bridge accessing Metra station platform.
  • Installation of micro piles drilled into bedrock for new bridge support foundations.
  • Original schedule called for removal of existing bridge and erection of new bridge over three weekend overnight periods. The work was completed in two weekend overnight periods.

Metra 35th Commuter Rail Stop

John Burns Construction Company constructed the 35th Street Metra Commuter Rail Stop in October 2010. This was a Federal Stimulus Project to bring commuters to US Cellular Field and IIT Campus.

The Challenges

  • Installation of a micro-pile and concrete footing system.
  • Construction of a system of concrete ramps and stairs to an elevated platform.
  • Installation of a snow melt system within the concrete stairs and ramps.
  • Excavation of approximately 8000 cubic yards of material.
  • Construction of Stainless Steel Windbreaks.

DALLAS WATER UTILITIES – LOVE FIELD

John Burns Construction Company of Texas was contracted to install waterline and sanitary sewer in and around active areas of Love Field Airport in Dallas, Texas. The purpose of the project was to abandon an existing waterline from under the active runways and reroute a new waterline and sanitary sewer around the exterior of the airport.

Our presence at the airport assisted in being awarded a $2,875,000 contract with ONCOR Electric installing electrical duct bank.

The Challenges

  • 6,200 linear feet of 16” ductile iron waterline
  • 7,100 linear feet of 24”-36” bar wrapped concrete cylinder waterline
  • 11,000 linear feet of 15”-21” PVC sanitary sewer
  • 1,300 linear feet of Pipe bursting of existing 15” to 21” sanitary sewer
  • 2,300 linear feet of boring for the sanitary sewer and waterline around the airport
  • Worked in coordination with the airport and existing business to minimize the impact on traffic and facilities.

PEGASUS LINK – SOUTHERN GATEWAY

John Burns Construction Company completed water, sanitary sewer and duct-bank work on I-35, south of downtown Dallas. The work involved replacing water and sewer mains that were currently in use to increase capacity in the area.

The Challenges

  • The project included replacement of approximately 50 year old mains, with more than 1,200 LF of 4E6 & 2E6 duct-bank, over 6,600 LF of waterline from 8” to 16”, 120 LF of 20” Bar-Wrapped Cylinder Waterline, over 3,200 LF of sanitary sewer from 8” to 18”, and one combined electric/telephone/gas cased highway crossing.
  • Intricate traffic control plans were designed to impact local traffic as little as possible and maintain vehicular flow rates during construction. This required attentiveness on the part of all working crews, as traffic patterns changed daily.
  • Many of the utility crossings perpendicular to I-35 required deep bore shafts next to live access-ramps.
  • Careful coordination was required with suppliers due to an “Buy-America” initiative as part of this project.
  • Coordination was required with The Dallas Zoo for water outages & traffic congestion during busy times of the year and for special events.
  • Many of the locations on this project had extreme grade changes and the project utilized a number of different types of retaining walls to best use the available space.

CTA 77th & Kedzie Street Bus Garage Project

The Challenges

  • Design-Build of a Bus Washer System at the 77th Bus Garage for washing of 250+ buses per day
  • High Speed Doors at the 77th Bus Garage and the Kedzie Bus Garage.
  • Building Automation System to interconnect the Bus Washer System, High Speed Doors, and electrical components to be run as one Unit.
  • Civil Construction consisting of new concrete slab, underground plumbing system, lead paint removal and asbestos abatement, masonry tuckpointing & repairs, painting, completely new HVAC exhaust fans, unit heaters, plumbing system, electrical and Building Automation System throughout the Bay.

Wacker Drive Lighting Installation

The Challenges

John Burns Construction Company completed the installation of new traffic signal equipment, cameras and new architectural lighting along Upper Wacker Drive.

  • JBCC completed the installation of new traffic signal equipment at all seven intersections along Upper Wacker from Randolph to Van Buren.
  • Installed new traffic equipment at Van Buren & Wells to add a contra flow right turn lane from Van Buren to Wells.
  • Installed new traffic equipment at Wells & Harrison along with Harrison & Wacker/Franklin to coincide with the congress interchange opening. 
  • JBCC also installed all new architectural lighting along Upper Wacker Drive to match the lighting which was previously installed on the East/West section of Upper Wacker Drive. 
  • Due to the new lane configuration and clearer separation of the service lanes from the through lanes, JBCC installed new traffic signals at Lower Wacker & Adams, 20 S Lower Wacker Drive, Lower Wacker & the Monroe on Ramp, and 155 N Lower Wacker Drive. 
  • JBCC was required to cut loops into the pavement for vehicle sensing on all of the intersections on Lower Wacker Drive and installed cameras for sensing on all of the intersections along Upper Wacker Drive.

Congress Parkway Streetscape

John Burns Construction Company completed the electrical installation along Congress Parkway in Chicago, Illinois in 2013. The project included the modernization of traffic signal intersections and installation of decorative lights that is a fully programmable LED lighting system complete with over 600 LED fixtures.

The Challenges

  • JBCC recently completed the electrical installation along Congress Parkway from Wells Street to Michigan Avenue.
  • This was a very unique project that included the modernization of eight (8) Traffic Signal intersections and the installation of new decorative roadway lighting poles along Congress Parkway.
  • The highlight of the project is a fully programmable LED lighting system complete with over 600 LED fixtures.
  • Three different types of programmable architectural LED lighting fixtures were installed at various locations along the ½ mile stretch of Congress Parkway that leads from the Eisenhower Expressway into the heart of the loop.
  • Sixteen foot tall cylindrical decorative LED bollards were installed in the parkway median planters along the entire stretch of Congress Parkway. Each bollard consists of four sections of color changing LED tubes that has unlimited design effects.
  • The system includes over 100 LED fixtures that wash the wall under the Chicago Board of Trade.
  • This one of a kind LED lighting system can produce over 16 million different color combinations and includes different seasonal, holiday and special event programs.

Small Cell Installation

Year Completed:  2015 – Ongoing
Contract Value: $110,000,000+

The Challenges

  • JBCC is currently working with all four (4) major carriers (T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint, AT&T) to expand 4G & 5G network in the Chicagoland Area.
  • The project has started in 2015 and is ongoing. To date JBCC has installed 1,100 small cell sites.
  • All sites are being installed on city of Chicago street and traffic poles and on ComEd wood utility poles.
  • To date we have trenched approx. 90,000 LF and directional bored approx. 100,000 LF for power and fiber.
  • Sweep & PIM testing are required on all equipment installed.
